Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - Causes and Prevention of SIDS
Everyone gets excited when bringing home a new baby. We fix up the nursery and prepare the linen and get all the feeding and changing implements in order in anticipation of our new bundles of joy to join our family. We're concerned about keeping our newborn baby safe so we learn and put into practice the things we learn about preventing sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). We make sure to place the baby on their back at bedtime as instructed, place the baby at the foot of the bed, and make sure the sheets don't choke or cover up the face. Recent data indicates that this practice is helping tremendously as public awareness takes effect on new parents. A new study however published on bmj.com states that over half of SIDS deaths still occurring, happen when the infant is sharing a bed with a parent, and even more so, if the parent is intoxicated with drugs or alcohol.
Careful review of SIDS cases identified several risk factors including household smoking, but researchers are looking for additional causes as well. Recently, eighty post mortem interviews of the parents and inspections of the home revealed that 54% of the SIDS deaths occurred with the parent was co-sleeping with the infant. That's compared to only 20% of SIDS deaths occurring when parents were not sharing a bed with the baby. One fifth of the deaths occurred when the infant was using a pillow and 25% were swaddled (tightly wrapped in a blanket).
These numbers were consistent in all levels of socioeconomic status and not just limited to the poorer populations and classes of people as previously believed. Of special concern were parents that would fall asleep on the couch with their infants, since a couch could so easily "swallow up" a tiny infant. Current recommendations are for the babies to be put on their backs to sleep, at the foot of their own bed, next to their parents bed.
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) was identified in 1969 and is a recognized category of natural death. It carries no implication of blame for the parents, however the incidence of intoxication of the parents often raises question and initiates blame. SIDS is a preventable tragedy that can be avoided by a little education and practice from the parents and caregivers.

Babies Born With A Cleft Palate Or Lip
As many as one in 700 babies are born with either a cleft palate or cleft lip. Often these can cause a number of related problems including glue ear, crooked teeth and hearing difficulties. The good news is that almost all babies go on to have successful corrective surgery.
How Clefts Develop
Clefts begin to form at about the 6 weeks gestation and are gaps in the palate, lip or gum. For reasons that are unknown, these parts which should join together do not do so in a small number of developing babies.
The causes are unknown, but some studies have suggested that smoking during pregnancy is linked with the condition.
An ultrasound scan when you are 18 weeks pregnant will pick up around half of the cleft lips, but cleft palates are not diagnosed until after the birth.
Feeding Your Baby
Babies born with a cleft palate will often have difficulty sucking. There is a special soft bottle that will help here, ask your pharmacist for details. Babies with a cleft lip are usually able to feed satisfactorily.
Treatment
A cleft lip is usually repaired by surgery within the first three months. A cleft palate is usually operated on at about age 6-9 months. In both cases treatment is effective and babies go on to lead a normal life. However, there is usually some scarring and the shape of baby's nose may be a little irregular.

How to Treat a Baby's Dry Skin
Babies get dry skin just like anyone else - they just can't pull out their industrial-sized Jergen's and take care of it. Severe dry skin can turn into painful eczema or just flaking skin. Here are some of the best ways to treat your baby's dry skin.
You may want to put a humidifier in your baby's room. Indoor heating or air conditioning can dry out the baby's skin, and a humidifier will put more moisture in the air. Give the baby shorter baths. Long, frequent baths remove natural, healthy oils and dry out your baby's skin. If you want to give your baby a bath every day (i.e. because he or she is wearing a diaper and really, that should be cleaned up), make it a short one - 10 minutes or so. Use soap sparingly, and make sure the water is warm but not too hot. This will prevent excessive drying. Put on moisturizer or baby lotion immediately after the bath to hold in the moisture from the bath. Gentle, unscented lotions are the best for small babies. Thicker moisturizers are more effective, so if your baby's skin is still dry with one moisturizer, try switching to something thicker. Make sure that your child is protected from the elements when you go outside.
